The leisure class is the outgrowth of the early discrimination between employments
    -to which some are deemed worthy and other unworthy
        >worthy are those that are classed as exploit
        >unworthy are those that are necessary everyday employment which no exploit enters

Any effort can be accounted as industrial if its purpose is the utilization of nonhuman things
       -all effort directed to enhance human life
       -industry: the effort that goes in to creating a new thing with new purpose given by the hand of its maker
                  out of passive material
        -exploit: an outcome that is useful to the agent

The leisure class emerged during the transition from primitive savagery to barbarism
    -from peaceable to warlike

Necessary conditions:
    (1) a predatory habit of life (war and/or large animal hunting) 
        -men habituated to the infliction of injury by force and stratagem
    (2) subsistence must be easily attainable to a considerable portion of the 
        community from steady application  of labor

Distinction between exploit and drudgery coincides with sex differences
    -physical attributes and temperament gave rise to a division of labor
    -habitual pursuit of large game requires more of the manly qualities
        -once groups begin hostile contact with other groups the divergence of function will
            take on the developed form o a distinction between exploit and industry.
    -aggressive assertion of force is not productive labor, women's work is

The industrious class is relegated to consume only what may be necessary to their usbsistence
Luxuries and the comforts of life belong to the leisure class.
